Abstract
Aim/objective:
A distinct variation in the morphometry of Red Blood Cells (RBCs) in various animals occurs and varies with storage time, age, breed, and sex. Here, the study was planned to identify the domestic animal species (cattle, sheep, goat) and their three major breed based on the morphometric parameter of RBCs.
Methods:
Blood from 21 male and female domestic animals (cattle, sheep, and goat), including their three major breed, was taken by jugular venipuncture. The thin blood smear was prepared immediately after blood was collected and stained with wright stain. ImageJ Software was used to perform a morphometric (diameter and circumference of RBCs) study. Again, the statistical analysis was achieved using ANOVA.
Results:
The mean diameter of RBCs of domestic animals like cattle, sheep, and goats were 5.22±0.06, 3.18±0.04, and 3.33±0.04 μm, respectively. However, the study showed variations in the diameter of RBCs of different breeds of these domestic animals. The mean diameter of RBCs of Red Chittagong, North Bengal Grey, and Sahiwal Local Cross cattle were 5.35±0.02, 5.15±0.03, and 5.10±0.04 μm, respectively. Again, the mean diameter of Indigenous Barind, Muzaffaribadi, and Nagpuri sheep were 3.15±0.03, 3.22±0.03, and 3.17±0.04 μm, respectively. Finally, the mean diameter of RBCs of Black Bengal, Red Kalahari, and Jamunapari goats were 3.24±0.04, 3.39±0.05, and 3.35±0.03 μm, respectively. In addition, the study showed the variation in the circumferences of RBCs on different breed of these selected animals.
Conclusion:
With a single drop of blood, one can easily identify common domestic animals and their breeds based on the diameters and circumferences of the RBCs.
